Before a reinstall: reloading Windows can remove files, programs and settings. Tell us what must be saved before work begins. Backup is additional for Nuclear and Good; the insurance backup in Better and Best covers the files agreed in advance, subject to drive readability.

Pricing terms: mention the Internet Special at check-in. Prices cover the listed services. Software licenses, parts, taxes and additional work are separate unless included in your estimate. We confirm scope and charges before proceeding.

Not every slow computer has a virus.

Our free limited diagnostic exists to work that out before anyone spends money. More extensive testing or disassembly may require a paid diagnostic — with your approval first.

Common signs of malware

These symptoms can indicate an infection — although hardware, software and account problems can look identical. This is exactly why we diagnose before quoting:

  • The computer runs unusually slowly or freezes
  • Persistent pop-ups or redirected searches
  • Unfamiliar toolbars, extensions or programs
  • Unexpected messages when the computer starts
  • Antivirus protection is unexpectedly disabled
  • Friends receive suspicious messages that appear to come from you

Do not be fooled by alarming pop-ups

A browser warning demanding you call a support number or pay immediately is a scam. Do not call the number in the message. Do not give a stranger remote access. Contact a provider using a phone number you already know — ours is (713) 472-4357. If you already shared passwords or account details, say so when you call: it changes what we need to protect.

What "malware" actually covers

Computer virus is a catchall term, but unwanted software arrives in many forms. Viruses spread by infecting other programs. Trojans disguise themselves as legitimate software. Spyware and ransomware steal information or hold it. Adware and unwanted browser extensions interfere with everyday use. Each needs a different response, which is why a single scan result is not a diagnosis.

Thorough cleanup, with attention to the cause

We evaluate the symptoms, check for identified threats and unwanted software, and review the browser and system settings that were affected. We use appropriate diagnostic and cleanup tools rather than relying on one scan. When practical, we repair affected settings and check system behavior afterwards. Some infections or extensive system damage do require reinstalling Windows — and we will tell you that rather than charging you for endless cleanups.

Protecting your files and accounts

Tell us which files are important and whether you have a current backup before work begins. We aim to preserve your existing Windows installation and data when practical, but cleanup cannot guarantee that damaged or missing files are restored. If account access may have been compromised, changing affected passwords from a trusted device is also necessary — and reviewing account security.

Reducing the chance of another infection

After cleanup we can discuss security software, updates, safer browsing and backup options. Malwarebytes runs $49.95/year and Bitdefender protection $50/year. To be straight with you: no security product prevents every threat, and a successful cleanup does not prevent a new infection later. What it does is remove the entry point and make the next one easier to catch.

The honest part

Cleanup does not guarantee recovery of damaged files, and it does not prevent future infections. What it does is give you back a machine that works, with the compromised accounts identified so you can close them properly.
